Baselworld 2013: The last day

Baselworld banner

After seven solid days on the Baselworld beat, existing on a diet of adrenaline, fast food, and endless cups of costly coffee, the mood is definitely cranky. The watch brand execs have been entertaining thousands of inquisitive customers, demanding dealers, and a host of haute horology hangers on. Everyone is Baselworlded out. All the fabulous presents have been unwrapped, endlessly debated, photographed from every angle by a million man army of Chinese industrial spies, and now there is little more to be said. It’s the last day of Baselworld 2013, and the smartly uniformed Swiss contract cleaners are just itching to get everyone out of the building so they can start hosing down.

So now we serve up one last portion of Baselworld, and this time we feature some of the more unusual offerings. Some watchmakers like to think beyond the watch and design other products too.

Hublot Headphones

Hublot headphones

Just in case you haven’t heard enough about Baselworld over the past week, Hublot have linked up with headphone experts Monster to produce Hublot Headphones with watches to match. These are of course not just any headphones, they are luxury noise cancelling cans with lightweight, black, carbon-fibre over-ear covering. The headphones have a brushed aluminum finish, rubber and leather headbands, and specially created carbon fiber earcups. Hip-hop artist and producer Swizz Beatz, who attended the press conference, will be Hublot’s celebrity partner in this new venture.

U-Boat Venenum motorcycle

U-Boat Venenum

What we have here is a horologist’s Hog. That’s right, a motorcycle. Not content with merely making moody and macho watches, U-Boat designer Italo Fontana together with bike designer and expert customiser Dino Romano have built a powerful U-Boat bike. Based on the Triumph Rocket III with a three cylinder engine of 140 Cu.in displacement and 220 Nm torque, Venenum boasts 160 horse power, and a wheelbase of 66.7 in. The total length is 97.6 inches with a rear tyre of 240 wide and 595 lbs total weight. There will be just 100 of these bombing around the Italian Riviera. The lucky owner will have a bike that is highly customisable as the bike is proudly made in a Tuscany workshop where customer specifications can be handle on an individual basis.

U-Boat U-42 Unicum

This is the awesome watch that will go with the bike. And what a stunner it is. 53mm, in typically chunky U-Boat machismo, this is actually the 2012 U-42 B7B specially treated to give it an authentically aged look. With bronze colouration, the watch looks like it was left in a rusting ship for a few decades and found in a drawer. Again the watch is fully customisable, and even the straps have been carefully aged to give the watch a time worn appearance.

Swatch Sistema 51

Swatch Sistema 51

Not content with merely celebrating their 30th anniversary at Baselworld – their debut appearance at the event by the way – Swatch has unveiled Sistema 51, their first self winding automatic movement watch, designed to be mass produced and containing just 51 components – hence the name Sistema 51. Most mechanical watches require at least three times that amount of parts. In another first for Swatch, it’s the first automatic movement to be produced in a fully automated fashion, no guys in white gloves and masks doing fiddly things with springs and screws. The rate of the movement is set by a laser as the escapement has no regulator. Swatch claims this will prevent the need for manual adjustments during the lifetime of the watch. Along with all of that they managed to obtain 90 hours of power reserve for the movement. The look of the watch is typically Swatch, conforming to the usual Swatch dimensions and familiar casing along with multiple colourways.

MB&F/ Reuge MusicMachine

Reuge MB&F Music Box

Finally, and it may be music to your ears, this is the last item we will feature for our coverage of Baselworld 2013. Appropriately, it is another product made by watchmakers thinking outside of the watch box. MB&F, one of the most avant garde of Swiss novelty watchmakers, got together with Reuge, probably the most famous name in musical boxes, to create this typically futuristic looking music box – or MusicMachine.

Although as Maximilan Busser, Creative Director of MB&F points out, the mechanics in musical box making are very similar to watch making. The energy stored by winding up the music box is similar to the stored energy of a watch movement. The space ship shaped MusicMachine plays music in traditional music box style. Each cylinder has been intricately hand crafted, but if you are expecting a tinkly version of Eidelweiss to emanate from this costly boy toy you will be disappointed. Inspect instead, tinkly versions of John Lennon’s Imagine, Deep Purple’s Smoke On The Water and Pink Floyd’s Another Brick In The Wall. British rock music and Swiss mechanical genius come together to form the perfect rich man’s desk toy. There will only be 66 MB&F/Reuge MusicMachines available. 33 in black lacquer and 33 in white lacquer, so get your order in now.

And so we say goodbye to Baselworld 2013 – but we will of course be featuring in more detail some of the sensational watches we have featured in brief or simply haven’t been able to show you.
