WatchCrime: Extra time needed to investigate Millwall watch thief

This article was written and contributed by Simon Lazarus who writes for a number of national and international publications

While this may sound like an own goal for the authorities, police have ramped up their enquiries into watches going missing recently in the dressing room at a well known Championship football team.

Josh Wright

Seen here heading the ball, 23 year old combative midfielder Josh Wright, part of the current Millwall side, has had his pricy £8,000 Cartier taken from his jacket whilst getting stuck in during an intensive training session.

Talk about getting your hands dirty! Though this robber was in and out as fast as Usain Bolt with the prized possession.

Wright himself has an interesting background and is the brother of former TOWIE (The Only Way Is Essex) star Mark Wright. That’s a series on British TV by the way.

On the professional front, after beginning at Charlton Athletic, Wright spent a short time on loan at Barnet and Gillingham.

Whilst at the Gills, he made his first appearance against, of all teams, Barnet. In 2009, he joined Scunthorpe United where one of his claims to fame was scoring against Manchester United in a League Cup tie.

Millwall FC

Millwall have now launched an internal enquiry themselves off the back of this incident as only club officials and staff were considered to be allowed entry into the team’s inner sanctum.

Yet this was only one of many crimes which have been committed at the Lion’s den. Rumour has it; this was the fifth player to lose a valuable watch which dates as far back as March of this year.

According to The Sun, Wright declared “The watch was brand new – I had only just bought it. I felt sick when I went back into the dressing room and discovered it had been stolen,”

There are even reports of in-fighting where some have pointed the finger at employees at the club or more shockingly a fellow professional.

The stealing began at Millwall’s training ground located in Bromley when a pair of watches suddenly sprang legs in just a couple of days.

After a thorough investigation by the authorities, no one was caught and all leads had been exhausted leaving the search a fruitless one.

However, more recent thefts have come to light after a comprehensive 4-0 home victory against Huddersfield Town with the club more determined than ever to uncover the real culprit (queue Hercule Poirot theme music)

But this is not the first time premium watches have disappeared from high profile dressing rooms. Back in September, Chelsea had to inform police at their Cobham training base in Surrey as several watches suddenly went without trace.

A timepiece is not only a unique item of arm candy but something that should be treasured. It is not known whether the thieves will strike again, but if in doubt, Wright and his Millwall colleagues will be thinking twice about where to put their items in future.

All I can say is watch this space.
