Wheels: Skoda Yeti

Wheels

Ever since its introduction in 2009, the Skoda Yeti has won several plaudits and industry awards. This year, the compact SUV was voted Best Car of 2013 by Auto Express after topping the magazine’s build-quality and in-car technology categories. Consumer group Which? also found the Yeti to be a truly impressive vehicle, recently naming it the most reliable car under three years old. With this in mind, we take a closer look at what is fast becoming Skoda’s most desirable model.

Styling

Although the Yeti won’t be winning any awards for exterior design, its styling remains attractive and functional. The unique Bi-xenon headlight design features adaptive cornering, while 17-inch alloy wheels and chunky plastic skirts reinforce the Yeti’s go anywhere attitude.

The flat rear end increases interior boot space and optional roof bars are also available for added practicality.

Performance

Both two and four-wheel drive variants perform admirably on the road, with the Yeti’s Haldex traction system adding no noticeable transmission or clutch strain.

Despite the published figures, even the smallest engines return decent performance. However, only the more powerful and punchy powertrains offer four-wheel drive. Mid-range diesel engines are fantastic when it comes to running costs, while more gutsy 2.0-litre models are incredibly strong workhorses.

Little body roll and sharp cornering are surprising traits when you consider the Yeti’s elevated driving position. Accurate steering and firm suspension makes the driver feel in complete control. This does compromise the Yeti’s comfort slightly, however it is still an enjoyable driving experience.

Interior

As you would expect from the Yeti’s form, there is no issue with headroom. Rear legroom is also generous with individually sliding seats a clever addition. The whole cabin area is bathed in natural light thanks to the car’s expansive windows.

The dashboard is also very well laid out, featuring a functional and easy-to-use colour touch screen. Skoda’s build-quality reputation is enhanced by a solid fit and finish throughout.

Standard equipment is highly commendable too as even entry-level models get air-conditioning, remote central locking, electronic front windows and a CD player.

More expensive variants benefit from dual-zone climate control, parking sensors, satellite navigation, leather upholstery and a multi-function steering wheel. However, some of these feature comes as standard on competitor vehicles.

Price

Starting at £15,753, although the Yeti combines superb engineering with heaps of practicality, its price point puts it in direct competition with some attractive rivals. For the same money, interested parties could buy a VW Golf with greater refinement and a lot more street cred.

Other crossovers include the Kia Sportage and Nissan Qashqai, which boast the same levels of quality with some more interesting and attractive features. Nevertheless, the Yeti remains a great all-round small-engine, mid-range specification compact SUV.

Suitable watches

Wherever possible we make appropriate watch recommendations to go with the wheels. With build-quality and practicality being the Yeti’s standout attributes, a matching timepiece should be just as durable and functional.

Timex SL series

The Timex SL Series chronograph is a fantastic and affordable all-round watch, featuring a tachymeter to measure speed and chronometer to track time. The case, crown and strap are made of tough stainless steel while hardened mineral crystal glass keeps the watch face protected.

Luminox EVO Navy SEAL

Another great option is the Luminox EVO Navy SEAL, which is made from carbon-reinforced polycarbonate to withstand almost anything. The manufacturers always visible light technology also means the hands and markings glow in the dark offering superior legibility.

Victorinox Swiss Army Summit XLT

Finally, the Victorinox Swiss Army Summit XLT combines the practicality of rubber with elegant stainless steel for an impressive finish. The watch also boats water resistance up to 100M and shock resistance to prevent damage.
