The Ruler of the Water: Sarpaneva Korona K0

Just because you are born in Finland, the land of a thousand lakes, and where the water is cold enough to freeze your bezels off, it doesn’t mean you can’t design a dive watch of lustrous beauty.

Stepan Sarpaneva was born in 1970 to a Finnish family with a long heritage of craftmanship. Son of jewellery designer Pentti Sarpaneva, Stepan was brought up to be a talented designer and craftsman. Sarpaneva first graduated from the Finnish School of Watchmaking and then moved to Switzerland to further his studies at WOSTEP.

In 1994, he began work for a series of prestigious watchmakers including Piaget, Parmigiani, Vianney Halter and the hugely talented and innovative Christophe Claret. During those ten years in Switzerland, Sarpaneva specialised in the crafting of complicated timepieces.

He launched the Sarpaneva Korona K0 two years ago as a prototype, and presented the finished collection to great acclaim at Baselworld 2012.

The Sarpaneva Korona K0 is also named by the watchmaker as the “Ruler of the Water” – many of Stepan’s watches incorporate powerful themes relating to Finnish traditions, folklore and legends. The watch is a beautifully handcrafted limited edition diver built to withstand depths of up to 300m. Cleverly, the timer ring is directly integrated into the movement. This unique feature allows all functions to be set by using only one crown located at 4 o’clock.

The dial is DLC coated steel and features superlume coated indices. The case measures 46mm across and is also constructed from steel. Inside is a modified and decorated Soprod A10 Calibre with 42 hours of power reserve featuring a mainplate which is integrated with the divers timing ring.

The Sarpaneva Korona K0 will be available in three editions – stainless steel case, two toned steel case or a black DLC case, each presented on a rubber strap.

Every Sarpaneva Korona K0 is handcrafted at Sarpaneva’s workshop in Helsinki. As a very limited edition, every Korona K0 is counted as one of the few.
