The new MUFF have

We are indebted to social media strategist Jerome Pineau for bringing MUFF Divers to our attention. No one, least of all MUFF Divers, would pretend they are at the cutting edge of haute horology, but they are undoubtedly colourful, fun, and proving extremely popular with Muff Diving aficionados.

Launched amid much fanfare in June 2010, Merlin’s Underwater Fashion Freaks (MUFF) are described as professional diving watches. Despite the raunchy name, the company, headquartered in Hertfordshire UK, insists that the watches are assembled from the finest materials and sourced from ethically and environmentally responsible suppliers. We are also told they are powered by the highest quality movements, although there is no mention of what the movement is, but it is backed by a 1 year warranty.

Muff 02

The MUFF Diver features a 40mm solid stainless steel case, soft rubber strap, a deep black textured dial with luminous hands and is water resistant up to 330 feet. The key to the MUFF Divers appeal other than its fun name, is the vibrant colour range. MUFF’s come in Blonde, Ginger and Brazilian, red, blue and black with either a black and red, or black and blue uni-directional bezel. New MUFF colours are being introduced rapidly and it won’t be long before you can exactly match your MUFF to your Lacoste polo. At 40mm they are clearly designed to be either a reasonably sized guy’s watch or a trendily large ladies watch. They also come in their own neat MUFF box.

MUFF Divers probably won’t be putting in an appearance at Baselworld this year, but you can expect to see plenty of them on suntanned arms in Marbella, Majorca, St. Tropez and other fashionable resorts around Europe this summer. At around US$112, a MUFF Diver is not going to break the bank, but you never know, it could just break the ice.
