Tech Watch: Kid’s GPS timepiece storms the US

They say all things are bright and beautiful but the Leo watch has been created for exactly this purpose.

Targeted at the children’s sector, this inspirational navigation watch has seen plenty of parents reach into their pockets to purchase. So what’s so unique? It seems it offers much more than simply telling the time as it provides a built in GPS tracking device.

This ensures in case of a serious emergency or even if the child has gone missing, that parents will be able to track their child down. What amazing times we live in!

Yet there have been previous incidents of timepieces being used as a location device. Take for example the case of a fisherman from Alaska who was saved thanks to a Breitling Emergency watch.

This special piece of kit has a built-in micro transmitter which fortunately provided the exact location of the stranded individual.

Meanwhile, the man behind the Leo is of course a father himself. Hailing from the States, Jason Sullivan is responsible for the product which has been manufactured in close collaboration with his own company Guardian Lion Wireless.

The Leo

When it comes to the actual design, it has certainly won over many critics for its childlike appeal which can be seen in its signature chunky style. While there are a number of bright and colourful cases to choose, the unique GPS function has proven to be a winner in the watch stakes. As parents there is no greater shock than losing your child dramatically, so in this way, the Leo is solving a genuine problem. An astonishing 800,000 children go missing every year.

Child abduction

How about the other features? The Leo is extremely secure and can be locked into place on your child’s arm hassle free. This means no matter how hard anyone attempts to wriggle it off, it will remain secure at all times.

Other settings include a dedicated panic button and a sensor. This will notify anyone if there’s been an unauthorised attempt to remove it, while cutting edge technology sees a precise built in emergency services detector.

This delivers a text message to both parents and the emergency services with the exact address, direction and of course the time.

If your child has been abducted then worried parents can access an interface online or via a mobile device which delivers instant coordinates of the child’s location within seconds.

The Leo has already received many plaudits for its ingenuity which has catapulted it onto television with several appearances on US prime-time shows.

However, there are several more uses that Sullivan has for the Leo and plans are afoot to further develop the product.

This features devices for senior citizens as well as for extreme sports addicts, people living alone and even those suffering from serious illness.

“I originally invented the Leo out of a passion to create a device that could protect our children from the impacts of abduction and predation. The outcome has evolved into a wristwatch that can literally be used by all ages for virtually any emergency situation,” he declared. The Leo will be targeted at children aged 6 to 12, outdoors enthusiasts, people with autism spectrum disorder or Alzheimer’s, and seniors who are under care, Sullivan says.

For less than £100 and with a little time, this could prove to be a real lifesaver for millions of people, large and small.
