Signals from outer space: Citizen Eco-Drive Satellite Wave

Citizen have introduced one of the coolest watches on the planet, and the most remarkable thing about it is it gets its incredible accuracy from beyond the planet, from signals beamed in direct from satellites circling the globe.

The Citizen Eco-Drive Satellite Wave regularly synchronises directly with satellites and, unlike atomic clocks and watches which depend on you to be sufficiently close to a radio signal, the satellite signal can reach you anywhere on earth.

How?

There are 24 satellites in outer space that pick up signals from atomic clock radio signals on earth. The satellite in turn bounces the signal straight to your Eco-Drive Satellite watch.

Of course you have to be outdoors to receive the signal – but should your watch lose any time at all indoors it will automatically synchronise once you are outside and you’ll be precisely on time again, all around the world.

The sleek, spacey look of the watch is suitably futuristic with a colour scheme of black, white and green. The flange ring is deliberately designed to remind you of satellite technology.

The case is made from steel and ceramic and is water resistant to 100 metres. The Eco-Drive Satellite is powered by a Citizen Eco-Drive H990 quartz movement which features satellite synchronisation, second city time, worldtime and a perpetual calendar.

The Eco-Drive Satellite Wave is going to be a top of the line model for Citizen when it comes out as a limited edition in November 2011. It’s likely to cost around US$3000 to slip on your wrist, but then what price perfect timing?
