From a watch inspired by a volcano in Iceland to another created using metal found on the wreck of the Titanic, one thing you can be sure of with a Romain Jerome timepiece is that it will be about as far removed from what could ever be considered ordinary as you are likely to find in the world of watchmaking.
Take for example Romain Jerome’s latest offering, the Moon Orbiter watch, which includes a flying tourbillon and is made using elements from the Apollo 11 space shuttle, as well as also featuring particles of moon dust in the dial.
Powered by an RJ Manufacture movement, its flying tourbillon uses a unique 3D architecture. The hefty rectangular shaped case measures 49mm in diameter and is 20mm thick and includes a number of unusually shaped sapphire crystals.
As mentioned, the case incorporates elements from Apollo 11 and includes a series of spring loaded lugs which are meant to look like hydraulic starting pistons but which also have a practical use as they help the watch to wrap around the wearers wrist for added comfort. The watch is then secured using a black alligator leather strap and pin buckle fastener.
Hours and minutes are displayed on the off centre dial with the red tipped open worked hands. The power reserve is nicely displayed between the lugs found at 6 o’clock. The flying tourbillon is then positioned opposite the hour and minutes dial and is without question the main detail of the watch, which has been constructed in such a way that your eyes are almost immediately drawn to the movement itself.
The stunning see through case back provides a superb view of the inner workings and the complexity of the movement.
Limited to just 25 pieces, the Romain Jerome Moon Orbiter Tourbillon boldly goes further than traditional watch making has gone before. From $115,000 or £79,300.
