As Click Tempus continues to bring you some of the highlights from the 2013 Geneva Time Exhibition, this year’s event closed having been visited by nearly 6000 people, which included watch professionals, collectors, enthusiasts and media from all over the world.
With the five day event heralded as a great success, it was announced that next year’s event will also take place at Batiment des Forces Motrices.
One of the leading independent watch makers to exhibit at this year’s event was Peter Speake-Marin. In what had been hugely successful 2012 for Speake-Marin, the British watchmaker used GTE 2013 to showcase some of his best creations, the highlight of which was the Peter Speake-Marin Spirit Mark 2.
The Spirit Mark 2 is a redesign of the Spirit Pioneer, which sold out earlier in 2012. The new version retains much of the distinctive look of its predecessor, whilst including a new movement, case and dial.
The watch itself is still very much recognisable as a Speake-Marin timepiece, yet it includes something that has not been seen on any of its previous watches. Where Speake-Marin watches normal include a polished bezel, the Mark 2’s bezel has been hand finished using a circular graining. This finishing certainly helps to enhance the overall look and style of the watch.
In addition to this, the stainless steel case that has a diameter of 42mm includes a solid case back, which is much thinner than the Spirit Pioneer’s case. One thing the Spirit Mark 2 has retained from the Pioneer is the inspirational message of “flight, love and persevere” that is nicely engraved on the reverse of the watch and which surrounds the Speake-Marin logo.
Housed inside the stainless steel case is the watch’s automatic calibre TT738 movement. The TT738 does in fact have a similar spec to the EROS 2 movement that would be found in the Speake-Marin Resilience or Piccadilly HMS, such as the 5 day power reserve and two main spring barrels.
The dial of the Mark 2 features a railroad chapter ring that circles the Speake-Marin logo and name. The all white LumiNova moulded logo, hours, minute markers and numerals work perfectly set against the black of the dial. The watch is then completed by a brown leather strap.
The Spirit Mark 2 is available for around $9980, making it somewhat on the ‘exclusive’ side. That said, it offers a nice alternative to other similarly priced Swiss timepieces.
