Day three of Baselworld 2013, and the term ‘like shooting fish in a barrel’ comes to mind. Wherever you look there’s a new and impertinent timepiece demanding your attention. And there’s still so much to cover. All we can do is grimly soldier on and continue to present you with this bonfire of delicious novelties.

Vulcain Aviator GMT Pilot DLC

The legendary Vulcain Cricket has been the choice of presidents as well as pilots, and this handsome new DLC coated limited edition piece focuses on the latter.

Combining its famous Cricket alarm movement with a 24-hour worldtime display, Vulcain launches the Aviator GMT Pilot DLC model – an exceptional wristworn mechanical instrument leaving an unmistakable trail of excellence and freedom.

Sporty, assertive, powerful, the large Arabic numerals enhanced with white Superluminova front the names of the cities appearing on the inner bezel ring. The signature characteristic of the iconic Cricket calibre, its alarm, is highlighted by a red-tipped hand lending the only touch of colour to this cool black composition.

Black is the new black at Baselworld. Diamondblack™ DLC consists solely of molecules of carbon and hydrogen arranged in a structure similar to that of diamond, producing a layer with excellent chemical stability and high corrosion resistance.

Chopard Superfast Collection

Chopard’s excellent racing credentials include the wonderful Mille Miglia series and the Grand Prix de Monaco, but now they have embarked upon some virile new additions to the Classic Racing Collection powered by a brand new in-house movement. Called the Superfast collection, the look is indeed racy and fuel injected. The new models are The Superfast Automatic, Superfast Power Control and Superfast Chrono.

Superfast models are generously proportioned with bold lines. On the inner bezel ring of the new watches, the minute numerals adopt the appearance of the markers that adorn sports-car rev-counters and speedometers. The hour, minute and seconds counters provide the legibility required in tense situations. The natural rubber strap carries the smooth tread of road hot slick tyres.

Urwerk 110 PTH

You can rely on Urwerk to push the horological envelope with their creations, and they have pulled off that not so easy trick once again for Baselworld 2013 with this impressive new challenge to your time telling abilities. This watch uses all the toys of Swiss fine finishing including  perlage, satin-finish and expert sand-blasting – techniques that transform an innovative, mechanical timepiece into a true piece of haute horlogerie.

Made from grade 5 titanium with a 950 platinum bezel, the watches are limited to just 20 pieces each and run on the in house UR 9.01 mechanical, automatic winding movement. Water resistance is only 30 metres, so when you pop down to your local jeweller to snap up yours, just remember to take it off before you step into the shower.

Glasshutte Original Blue Hour

German based GO,  hail from the same exclusive watchmaking fiefdom as A. Lange & Sohne in the Glasshutte region of Saxony. They have somehow managed to evoke the essence of a hot and smoky 60s night club into a watch, and called it the Blue Hour. It definitely has that bluesy around midnight feel to it.

Retro modern and elegant, the domed German silver dials are galvanised in Glashütte Original’s own dial manufactory and given a sunburst finish. Stylised Arabic numerals appear at hours 3, 6, 9 and 12 within a finely drawn white minute ring. Lightly curved hour and minute hands in white gold with superluminova highlighting and a svelte seconds hand assure that the time remains perfectly legible at all hours.

The pure design of the watch is enhanced by precisely milled hour indexes. The watches are just 39mm reflecting the new trend for more streamlined watches.

TAG Heuer Carrera Calibre 16 Day Date 41mm

Jack Heuer is celebrating 50 years of his involvement with the much idolized Carrera watch at Baselworld, it’s a swansong for one of the grand old men of Swiss watchmaking. The new collection for Baselworld is true to the rich racing pedigree of the brand.

The TAG Heuer Carrera’s unrivaled motor-sports heritage shines forth in this sleek, modern edition of one of the bestselling CARRERAs. Loaded with features–full day of the week and day of the month display, three chronograph subdials and a 41mm bezel with tachymeter scale–the overall look is reminiscent of a classic racecar dashboard.

Five-row steel for the bracelet, alternating fine-brushed and polished finishes and fastening with a solid steel folding clasp. Water resistant to 100 meters, the dial is protected by a domed, scratch-resistant sapphire crystal treated with a double-sided, anti-reflective coating for better readability. The oversized crown and pushbuttons echo vintage stopwatches.

Planet Swatch

And finally, a quick visit to Planet Swatch, as the universally popular fashion brand are describing their first ever appearance at Baselworld. It’s all too easy to forget that there very well may not have been a Swiss watch industry to speak of if not for the Swatch. Swatch  almost singlehandedly rescued the Swiss watch industry from oblivion in the early 80s in its fight back against the onslaught of Japanese quartz watches.

Swatch celebrates its 30th birthday this year, and it continues to do what it’s always done, in producing an endless variety of colourful, fashionable and affordable on trend watches which still hold loads of appeal for new generations. Swatch are encouraging visitors to Instagram pictures to all their friends wearing the new watches, and many of them are finding their way on to Pinterest.
