YPCAI (You Probably Can’t Afford It) looks at watches priced beyond the annual salary and wildest dreams of most mortals and which will forever remain a grail watch.
British actor Jason Statham loves his watches, and in many of his movies you can usually rely upon a lingering watch moment when he displays a costly watch for the benefit of watch nerds to identify and remark upon.
In his latest movie Parker (2013) he doesn’t disappoint. Parker is a hardened criminal, the invention of the late author Donald E. Westlake. In this new action packed crime movie starring Statham and Jennifer Lopez, to track down some villains who have wronged him he adopts the identity of a wealthy Texan property hunting in Palm Beach Florida.
Jason’s Texan accent accent may be as fake as a $10 replica watch, but the Richard Mille RM011 Felipe Massa is bound to be the real deal. Statham wouldn’t entertain the idea of anything less. We are treated to as much on screen flashes of the watch as we are Jennifer Lopez’s underwear.
The movie industry, like the watch industry, has certainly moved on. Whereas 15 years ago it would in all probability be a Rolex watch on his wrist, today, high-end niche brands are the favoured choice to indicate wealth and sophistication.
In Transporter, Statham was wearing a Panerai for all to see. In the upcoming Expendables 3, (yes it’s turning into another Rocky style franchise) we can only guess at what watch loving deals Sylvester and Jason will be able to secure.
The RM011 Felipe Massa Flyback Chronograph comes in a variety of casings including white gold, rose gold and titanium with a skeletonised dial face. With a 55 hour power reserve, the watch’s automatic winding movement is capable of chronograph function, annual calendar, 60-minute countdown timer, and more. By using the pusher between 4 and 5 o’clock, the running chronograph can be reset without first having to stop the mechanism. It’s a lot of watch as the dimensions are 50mm by 40mm. It runs on a calibre RM011 in-house movement, and was specially made for Felipe Massa by his good friend the watchmaker Richard Mille, who also of course, makes exclusive watches for Rafael Nadal, Bubba Watson and most recently Sebastien Loeb the French rally driver.
If you wanted to buy one you are looking at around $115,000 which certainly puts it in the category of You Probably Can’t Afford It, but for the cost of a cinema ticket or two you can at least see it in action. Below is the official trailer for the movie, sadly, it doesn’t show the watch.
