This watch was originally created in 2008, and represents well over $100,000 of superior Harry Winston workmanship. It also makes it easily another candidate for our ongoing series You Probably Can’t Afford It.
This watch was made to celebrate the 20th anniversary of Harry Winston’s highly successful Premier Excenter Perpetual Calendar timepiece, and was made as a special edition model limited to only 20 units.
Under the platinum 41mm hood beats the Girard Perregaux 3306 manufactured in-house by GP and upgraded with an add-on Agenhor 111.HW module.
The add-on module gives the watch the ability to perform two complications, the date and month as well as a leap-year indicator that includes a rotating disk with 1-2-3-4 numerals (the “4″ is for the leap year) with the current year indicated by a small white triangle printed on the dial. So this perpetual calendar is fully equipped for the long haul. That’s why with watches of such high calibre, it doesn’t matter if the watch was made in 2008 or 1958, the watch is designed to be handed down from generation to generation.
The watch also features a moonphase indicator and a yellow-painted second time zone hand, which is set by a pusher located at 2 o’clock.
Adjusting a perpetual calendar due to a change of time zone can make such a watch a difficulty when travelling. I know this from a humble Seiko perpetual calendar, it was never the same after a trip to Dubai which set the date forward. But the perpetual calendar on the Premier Excenter is easy to operate with the GMT indicator.
The watch’s engine-turned anthracite or silvered dial creates a beautiful background to the complications on the watch, which are clear, confident and above all, highly legible. background, like all highly complex watches, there is a tendency for it to look a little busy, but some people thrive on the challenging level of complexity. And somewhere out there, there are 20 owners of this magnificent timepiece who treasure it and will continue to do so down the years. The asking price online for this watch is $84,200 from an original asking price of over $112,000.
