You Probably Can Afford It: Seiko Velatura Big Calendar Chronograph

In recent weeks, in YPCAIYou Probably Can’t Afford It –  we have been showcasing a series of high priced watches, many of them starting at minimum $30,000 and rising to obscenely stratospheric levels. Never mind moves like Mick Jagger, you need money like Mick Jagger to even think of buying them.

So for the next few weeks we thought we would turn the idea around and focus on watches which the average wage earner with more modest horological aspirations can afford and enjoy.

When it comes to affordability and excellent value for money, Seiko is always a great place to start. Some watch connoisseurs get sniffy about Seiko quartz watches, but the reality is, for all the effort, craftsmanship, man hours and undoubted skill that goes into the making of high-end mechanical Swiss watches, even your most basic Seiko will keep time more accurately and just keep on going. Seiko also combine reliability with an all important sporty sense of style with the Velatura range.

Sailing

The Velatura range was created as a marine collection which pays homage to the skill, bravery and dedication of ocean going sailors. Seiko consulted several top sailors in Europe, Australia and Canada to arrive at a range suitable for all sailing situations.

This particular model is new on the market and features a 42mm stainless steel case with smart contrasting black and rose gold colouring. There’s a big calendar window at 12 o’clock with sub-dials at 3 o’clock, 6 o’clock and 9 o’clock respectively.

The watch features a quartz chronograph movement and is water resistant to 100 metres, which means you can leap straight off the yacht for a bracing ocean swim whenever the mood takes. The chronograph is up to 60 minutes in 1/5 second increments. The watch comes on a urethane band and also a two year warranty against defects.

It pays to shop around, you could pick this handsome looking watch up online for as little as $399.00. A quality watch you can afford.
