We recently featured the Yeslam Aviator III in one of our weekly news bulletins and liked the look of it so much that we thought we’d bring you a more in depth insight.
The Aviator III combines the world of aviation and fine watchmaking and is available in four different versions: silver, gold, chocolate and blue, which is particularly eye catching (pictured above).
The watch has been designed for pilots by pilots, with its main feature being that it is capable of calculating the speed of an object relative to Mach or the speed of sound – useful should the planes electronic equipment, for whatever reason, decide to fail!
This is perhaps one of the most interesting pilots watches we’ve seen in recent months. In fact, there is quite an interesting story behind the Yeslamd brand and the Aviator collection. Owned by Yeslam Bin Laden, the estranged half brother of Osama Bin Laden, the Swiss brand produces sunglasses, fragrances and leather goods, as well as luxury timepieces.
Yeslam, a graduate from University of Southern California, hadn’t spoken to his infamous brother for decades before his death in 2011. The Aviator collection, of which the Aviator III is its latest offering, was inspired by the death of Yeslam’s father who died in a plane crash in his native Saudi Arabia in 1967.
Back to the watch then, the Aviator III is crafted from titanium and measures 46mm in diameter and is equipped with a bi-directional rotating bezel. It is this that is used to calculate the speed of the object.
Water resistant to 50 metres, the watch features a double anti reflective sapphire crystal that protects the radial guilloche dial. The dial also includes applied rounded hour indexes with white luminescent coated hands. There is also a second timezone displayed between 4 and 6 o’clock and a date window at 12 o’clock.
The Aviator III is driven by a Swiss automatic La Joue-Perret 5900 calibre movement, which operates at a steady 28,800 vph and also includes a 42hr power reserve. The watch is then finished by a perforated calfskin leather strap.
