Who doesn’t like to wear a big, oversized, sporty bit of arm candy on their wrist? However, it seems that American watch makers, SISU Watches have taken the idea of an oversized wristwatch to a whole new level.
The company specializes in creating big, beefy watches. Make no mistake, these things are huge!
If you’re a fan of ultra thin, lightweight, elegant little timepieces, then in all honesty there’s probably nothing for you here. However, if (really) big and bold flicks all your switches then there could be a lot to be had from SISU’s latest offerings.
Designed in sunny California and crafted in Switzerland, a SISU watch may well divide opinion but credit where it is due; these watches certainly make a statement and stand out like few others. The concept behind the brand is to create watches that an athlete or a larger guy might wear – think very masculine and very big.
Just take a look at this picture of me, for example. I had arms like Mr Muscle before I started wearing a SISU, now look at me…
…well, not quite but you get the idea, these are big watches for big blokes.
According to its website, SISU says its objective was to achieve ‘industrial elegance’. Admittedly, this isn’t a term widely used in the watch industry, or anywhere else for that matter. However, take nothing away from SISU, it could certainly be argued that the brand succeeded in what they set out to achieve.
SISU watches may well be big, some may even say garish, but there is a kind of elegance to them at the same time, which I for one definitely like.
SISU’s watches are offered in either a quartz or automatic version of each timepiece and are for the most part, available for less than £1000.
SISU Bravado A4
The SISU Bravado A4 watch is driven by a self winding automatic movement (Swiss ETA 2824), which beats at 28,800vph and offers a maximum power reserve of 38 hours. The watch weighs in at a whopping 241 grams, with its case (excluding the crown) measuring 55mm in diameter; it has a thickness of 17.5mm.
The bold case is made from surgical strength 316L stainless steel, which has been PVD coated.
The watch also features an anti-reflective sapphire crystal, with its matt black dial offering excellent readability as the natural chrome applied indices really stand out. The dial also displays a date window at the position of 4 o’clock, with a serrated exhibition window showing the watch’s inner mechanism. The hands have also been coated with a superluminova treatment.
Limited to just 150 pieces the watch is presented in a trademark SISU Strongbox and is available for £895 direct from the SISU UK website.
SISU Guardian A2
The SISU Guardian A2 features the same automatic movement as the Bravado above. It also has a stainless steel case that measures 54mm in diameter, with a thickness of 14mm. The watch is water resistant to 100m.
For reasons of comfort and durability, and because the watch is so hefty, the crown is located at the position of 10 o’clock, which is a trademark of all SISU watches. The dial has a kind of aviator look about it, which is certainly appealing. Again, because the watch is so large, readability isn’t a problem.
The watch also comes with a stainless steel bracelet that has a width of 32mm. The SUSU Guardian A2 is also a limited edition, with each timepiece individually numbered.
The automatic version of the watch is available for £895, whilst a similar quartz version is available from £525.
