Romain Gauthier – A constant force in watchmaking

Romain Gauthier is another example of one of the many independent watchmakers that have built up quite a reputation despite only producing watches for a relatively short period of time. We recently featured Antoine Martin on Click Tempus, who, along with Romain Gauthier, produce some really impressive timepieces that would be worthy additions to even the very best of luxury watch collections.

Born in 1975 in Le Sentier, a region at the centre of the Swiss watch making industry, Romain Gauthier developed a passion for watch making from an early age. After studying precision mechanics and working for a manufacturer of high calibre watch parts in the Valle de Joux, he launched his own watch brand in 2006.

Today, the Romain Gauthier brand designs, develops, produces, assembles and regulates completely in house, making it a manufacture in every sense of the word. It’s RG’s ability to combine traditional haute horology and innovative micro engineering with super sleek and modern design that helps add to the appeal of this luxury watchmaker.

With Baselworld just around the corner we look forward to seeing what new creations Romain Gauthier will showcase at this year’s event.

Romain Gauthier Logical One

The Logical One watch from Romain Gauthier is one serious piece of kit that true haute horology fans will almost certainly love. Despite being visually stunning, it’s the modern take on the traditional movement that makes the watch even more impressive.

The movement, which is incredibly difficult to manufacture and is considered by many to be one of the holy grails of fine watch making, features a fusee and flat chain style system that is used to create constant force. The chain system looks not too dissimilar to a small bicycle chain, the only difference being that the links in the Logical One are made from small synthetic rubies.

In addition to the ruby links, the Logical One also features an ergonomic push button winding system, mainspring barrel with sapphire inserts, dial side visible balance and a 60hr power reserve indicator.

The Logical One measures 43mm in diameter and has a height of around 14mm. The in-house built movement includes 30 jewels and is made up of 333 individual components, beating at 28,800 vph.

Romain Gauthier Calibre 2206 HMS

Launched in 2010, the Romain Gauthier Calibre 2206 HMS is limited to just 50 pieces and is another example of exemplary watch making. The watch features a self winding 2206 calibre movement that is embellished with 22 fine gemstones. The movement also includes a bespoke, in-house built balance wheel, with 4 inertia screws which reveal its regulation indicators.

The crown on the Romain Gauthier Calibre 2206 HMS has been fitted horizontally under the movement that the watch can be wound without the wearer having to remove it from his wrist.

The movement is then housed inside either an 18k white or pink gold case that measures 41mm in diameter. There is a also a 750 platinum version available too. The case features anti reflective crystal sapphire on the front and back.

Romain Gauthier Mechanical Cufflinks

With his engineering background, Romain Gauthier doesn’t just produce high end luxury watches. Take a look at the Romain Gauthier Mechanical Cufflinks. Who would have thought that the simple cufflink could become an innovative piece of technology?

The Romain Gauthier Mechanical Cufflinks are as unnecessary and utterly pointless as they are brilliant and remind me of something out of a James Bond movie.

These rapid action cufflinks are made up of over 45 micro-components and are equipped with a specialised push piece system that that enables the cufflink to locked and unlocked easily. The push piece system also protects against the cufflink accidentally becoming unfastened whilst you are wearing them.

The cufflinks are available in either 18k white or pink gold with titanium or in an all titanium version and let’s face it, you’d probably need to be Daniel Craig to be able to afford them!
