Underwater Wednesday: SEIKO Prospex Marine Master ‘Spring Drive’

Underwater Wednesday

Underwater Wednesday is a series dedicated to one of the most popular of all men’s watches, the diver. Watch aficionados and bushy blonde beach boys just can’t get enough of them.

We have already featured some excellent SEIKO divers along the way, but the SEIKO Prospex Marine Master series is something special, and this limited gold-coated edition is something extra special.  The Marine Master series is nicknamed tuna for the resemblance of the dial to a can of tuna fish. In fact, at 50mm, the watch is not much smaller than a lunchtime tuna can.

Now, with the launch of the Marine Master Spring Drive SBDB008, this is the first to be fitted with the remarkably accurate cal. 5R65 Spring Drive movement with a 72 hour power reserve and date window at 4:30.

The SBDB008 case and shroud are titanium, with a gold coated bezel, crown and shroud screws. This gold and black design was originally available only with a quartz movement as the 7459 “Gold Tuna”.

Due to be unleashed upon an eagerly expectant dive watch community sometime in July, the SBDB008, water resistant to 600m,  will retail for around US$3,900 and will be limited to just 300 pieces. At the moment the computer generated graphic shown above is the only picture of the watch that we have, once the live photographs are released we will show it in greater detail.

It’s been released to coincide with the 100th anniversary of Seiko’s first ever watch The Laurel. The chances are you will not be able to strap the strictly limited gold-coated edition round your wet suit, but they will release the SBDB008 with the famous Spring Drive movement in larger quantities.
